Political Science Department : Profile

The Department of Political Science came into being in 1967, beginning its journey with the B.A. (Pass) programme. The first batch, a close-knit group of about 80 students, embarked on this new academic path under the guidance of Dr. Saroj Pathak, the department’s first teacher-in-charge, whose leadership shaped its early years.

The department is dedicated to nurturing an understanding of contemporary political, social, and economic realities. It emphasizes the development of analytical and research skills, critical thinking, and informed engagement with political processes. The discipline offers students, i.e. its young women, a platform to develop leadership skills.

In line with the National Education Policy (NEP), the department offers a four-year undergraduate programme with a specialized, research-oriented curriculum. The programme opens doors for experiential learning and independent research, enabling students to connect theoretical knowledge with real-world applications and prepare for professional and academic pursuits in political science and related fields.

To further strengthen research skills, the department has established structured research guidelines for the 7th and 8th semesters. These guidelines support students in developing methodological rigour and analytical capabilities when engaging with socio-political topics.

Through these initiatives, the Department of Political Science continues to uphold its commitment not only to academic excellence but also to the holistic development of students as informed and socially responsible citizens.
