Department Profile
The Department of Geography was established in 1995, under the BA (Programme) Course. In order to broaden the horizon of understanding about Geographical Studies, the College started B.A. (Honors) course in Geography in 2017 under the CBCS mode. The Department of Geography has always been committed towards excellence. Along with the theoretical framework, the department has established a well-equipped Cartography laboratory and GIS Lab for students to learn and enhance their skills through practical applications in the fields of Cartography, Remote Sensing, GIS and GPS. The Department of Geography has prepared 3-D and 2-D maps of the College which help the students and commuters to get the location of teaching and non-teaching places within the college campus. The department conductsthe annual Geo Fest- Resurgence in which students and experts from various universities and colleges participate in academic deliberations to enhance academic interaction. The society has its own e-magazine “GEOSOPHY” which is edited and maintained by its executive members. The Department of Geography runs a certificate course on Travel & Tourism with the objective of educating, training and developing the much-needed skills to prepare students who jointhe travel and tourism industry, and are valuable in providing them with alternative career opportunities. The Department of Geography is looking after the functioning of the Paper Recycle Unit installed in our college campus. As a matter of fact, this unit utilizes the waste paper accumulated from various departments as raw material and prepares recycled paper which can be used for various purposes. To cater to the needs of students, the geography department has a well-equipped laboratory for conducting practical classes, which are managed by experienced and capable staff. In addition to laboratory, the department has a good collection of books in Departmental Library.
  1. Cartography Lab: has a Tracing Table, LCD Projector, maps, models and charts.
  2. GIS Lab: equipped with computers, GPS, Stereoscopes, Rotameter and Planimeter and LCD Projector.The lab is well-enabled with satellite imageries, aerial photographs as well as various simulation programs related to various practical’s.
  • Departmental Library: The Department has its own library with a good collection of books on Geography, Practical notes and Projects. The books available in the library are also issued to students.
  1. Store Room: The Department also has a separate store room that is issued for the storage of maps, charts as well as instruments and equipment’s.
2 Scope of the Subject: The Scope of the Course covers the fields such as Geomorphology, Cartographic Techniques, Human Geography, Thematic Cartography, Climatology, Statistical Methods in Geography, Geography of India, Economic Geography, Environmental Geography, Field Work and Research Methodology, Regional Planning and Development, Remote Sensing and GIS, Evolution of Geographical Thought and Disaster Management based Project Work. The career prospects of this course lie in theSurvey of India, Space application centre, Urban and rural development departments, Metropolitan development corporation, and Social and environmental research organizations.This course provides a sound foundation for students willing to pursue higher education in the discipline of Geography, Geology, Metrologyand Urban and Regional Planning.   After completion of undergraduate programmes in Geography, students will be able to:
  • Analyse the earth as an integrated human-environment system by examining changing interactions at different spatial and temporal scales.
  • Understand the subject matter of various branches of physical and human geography.
  • Analyse geographical data and interpret its significance within the context of human-environment relations.
  • Communicate geographical concepts and data effectively using oral, written and visual forms.
  • Contribute effectively to pursue innovative solutions to human-environment problems.
  • Investigate complex real world challenges using appropriate concepts, methods, and tools from one or more geographical sub-disciplines.
  • Explain the societal relevance of geographical knowledge and apply it to real world human-environment issues.
